Extended
Absence due to Medical Emergencies
Students with disabilities are expected to follow
the attendance requirements of all courses in which they are enrolled.
From time to time a student with a disability must miss class because
of an unavoidable medical emergency or extended illness. In such cases,
students should notify Dr. Philip Santa Maria, Associate Vice President
for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. Dr. Santa Maria will notify
faculty about the extended absence. Proper documentation is necessary
to justify the absences. The instructor in each course will determine
the appropriate action to be taken as a result of the absence. In
some cases an incomplete grade (I) may be appropriate. In other cases
the student may withdraw from the class, take a medical leave or withdraw
from the college.
Incompletes
A grade of incomplete is given when the student
is unable to complete the obligations of a course in the required
time due to unforeseen circumstances beyond his/her control. The
student is expected to discuss the course requirements that need
to be completed and to develop a timetable for the completion of
the requirements with the faculty. An incomplete course contract
must be completed. Course requirements are expected to be completed
by the 10th week of the following semester. If course requirements
are not complete by that date, a grade of E is automatically recorded
for the course.
Medical Leave
A medical leave may be appropriate when the
student cannot complete the courses in a given semester. The student
is withdrawn from all courses for the semester. The student is expected
to return to the college within two semesters. Students considering
a medical leave should contact financial aid to determine the impact
of the leave on financial aid eligibility when they return to the
college. They should also consult with student accounts to discuss
the financial obligation for the charges incurred in the semester.
Medical
Withdrawal
A medical withdrawal is granted when the student
does not intend to return to the college. Students should consult
with student accounts to discuss their financial obligations from
the medical withdrawal. They should also consult with financial
aid to determine eligibility for financial aid if they wish to continue
higher education.
